The 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup was the fourth edition of the tournament organized by FIFA. It took place in South Korea and Japan from May 31 to June 10, 2001. The eight participating teams were Brazil, Canada, Australia, Japan, Cameroon, South Korea, Mexico, and France.
The tournament was played in two groups of four teams each, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stages. The final was played between Japan and France, with France winning the match 1-0 and claiming their first Confederations Cup trophy.
Brazil finished third in the tournament, defeating Australia in the third-place playoff. Cameroon, Canada, Mexico, and South Korea were eliminated in the group stages. The tournament's top scorer was Robert Pirès of France, who scored three goals.
The 2001 Confederations Cup was notable for being one of the first major international football tournaments to use goal-line technology. In addition, it marked the first time that a team from outside Europe or South America (Japan) had reached the final of the tournament.
